The World Discusses Global Warming in Cancun

Representatives from 200 countries came together in early December to discuss climate change and global warming. The annual climate conference, held this year in Cancun, Mexico, served to bring trust and cooperation between the rich and poor nations of the world on the issues, challenges, and effects of global warming. A Green Climate Fund was set up, which will give $100 billion a year by 2020 to poor nations, though no clear plan on how the money is to be raised was offered. Measures to protect tropical forests were discussed along with methods of sharing clean energy technologies.

Environmental groups were not satisfied with the inability of the group to make any progress on extending the Kyoto Protocol, which concerns the reduction of green house emissions in 40 of the riches nations. As it stands the first commitment period of the Protocol will expire in 2012 and doesn’t include the United States and China. The United States never ratified the protocol and doesn’t want to be bound by a treaty that doesn’t include China and India. Russia and Japan, both currently bound by the protocol, have stated they won’t agree to a new commitment of the treaty unless the United States and China accept the terms of the new treaty. Decisions on the Protocol, whether to extend it, throw it out, or devise a new one, have been put off until the next climate conference which will be held in Durban in 2011.

Despite the disappointment over the lack of progress with the Kyoto Protocol, the conference is generally considered to have been a successful meeting. In response to the outcome of the conference, a representative of Greenpeace is quoted as saying, “Governments have chosen hope over fear and put the building blocks back in place for a global deal to combat climate change.”
